In 1994, local bee shortages forced California almond growers to import honey bees to ensure that their $800 million crop would be pollinated. Farmers in New York observed pumpkin blossoms covered with pollen long after they had opened, when, in the past, they were stripped of pollen in no time at all.
Part of the problem is the arrival of the Africanized bee, which poses threats to beekeepers and other bee species. Furthermore, both the Africanized and Asian bees carry parasitic mites, which, said Harman, are largely responsible for the honey bee’s decline.
