On Thursday night, Rappahannock residents will have their first opportunity to meet with representatives of Sprint PCS, the telecommunications company interested in installing cellular phone equipment in the county.
A joint meeting of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission, has been scheduled for March 18 at 7 p.m. at the Rappahannock County High School.
The meeting is being held to solicit public input on the possible expansion of cellular service into Rappahannock, and “the possibility and need for the construction of towers to transmit and relay such signals.”
Issues likely to be discussed at the meeting include:
• Why the telecommunications company needs to expand its service in Rappahannock;
• The need for improved communications in the county — both emergency radio and personal cellular telephone;
• What equipment will be needed — including the tall, metal communications towers — and where they would be located to serve Sprint customers;
• What is the long-term future of cellular communications, in particular, the need for tall towers;
• What the effects would be on the county’s natural viewshed;
