has recently surfaced from the coffee house circuit and has sent tremors throughout the folk music world with his 1998 release Shaking Off Gravity, a 13 song CD that Gilbert wrote, arranged and produced from the familiar confines of his Massachusetts home.
Folk music’s popularity was at its zenith in the 60’s and 70’s when the forces of Dylan, Taylor and Mitchell were able to draw rock-star size crowds. And while that may never happen again, Gilbert’s Gravity provides evi-1, dence that the genre is very much alive and kicking.
“Powerful and uncompromising,” said the Boston Globe. “Gilbert strikes like lightning,” said New Texas Magazine. “The lyrics alone are better than almost anything else you’ve heard,” added the Ft. Worth StarTelegram. And the Chicago Tribune said Gilbert possesses “an astonishingly smooth, pure tenor voice.”
Gilbert, who said that lately he has been listening to a lot of Elvis Costello, is very happy with the way the record turned out.
“Its the record that I’ve always wanted to make. I wanted' a raw album that didn’t sound constricting” Gilbert said.
Since it took about 20 years for things to start happening for you, what advice would you give to someone embarking on a music career? “Don’t quit your day job. No, but seriously, whatever you are into you need to study the history. Its like, if you’re into rock, then you have to have every Beatles album ever made ... that sort of thing. In other words, you need to consume yourself with it, or at least that is my opinion,” Gilbert said.
