The rolling countryside of Rappahannock County, where the population is a little more than 7,000 is hardly where you would expect to find a pioneering new school. But it is here, almost invisible amid the hills off a little-traveled road in the Castleton area.
Castleton encompasses thousands of acres, hundreds of cows, a sprinkling of houses, two general stores and now one school.
The school is called Hearthstone.
Three years ago Hearthstone Whole Family Learning Center was a dream of home schooling parents. It started with 25 children and much volunteer labor. Today, it is a non-profit organization employing 12 staff with 40 students.
Housed in a Cape Cod house and renovated barn, the school is inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s educational philosophy, striving for an education that achieves a balance between “the heart, the hands and the head.” This idea is translated into a hands-on, real life and art-based approach to developing skills in children.
The school, which currently has children from nursery to 10th grade, is also intent on providing an environment where each child’s unique abilities flourish.
