breakfast tour of the flower beds, and there it was. A curled up blossom, ready to burst forth. The day had arrived!
I called in sick, set up a camp chair in front of the flower and waited.
Around about 3:36, the bloom popped open, and I had won my bet!
“Who Da Man, huh? Who Da Man!” I shouted. I ran into the house and confronted my wife.
“You owe me ten bucks! Pay up!”
The Wife had to see it with her own eyes, of course, and grudgingly allowed that I was right. She went back in the house, found her purse and pulled out an Alexander Hamilton. She handed it over. It was one of the best moments of my married life.
Following that success, I’ve expanded this year. I have 18 different seed packages to germinate. I have a schedule set up so that they should all be ready around Kentucky Derby Day or shortly thereafter.
I’ll be placing seedlings in the ground that morning and watching the races all that afternoon. It’s a pleasant thought that has carried me through these cold winter nights.
