Anyone who buys produce can assist by investing in organic goods. In addition to eating cleaner food, a large market share of organic-produce consumers helps to discourage indiscriminate pesticide application.

Beekeeping, or apiculture, need not be limited by space. “You can set up a colony anywhere,” Harman said, noting that some beekeepers are penthouse-dwellers in New York City.

For Harman, the benefits of apiculture include an intimate understanding of the natural facts of pollination, along with a more dynamic connection to the world of the bee.

“I can go to a colony and listen,” Harman mused, “And I can hear if it doesn’t have a queen.”

Harman encourages anyone interested in beekeeping to contact her at (540) 364-4660 (fax & phone), or by email at AHworkerB@aol.com.
