The reasons the ATV’s are • prohibited by law on public" roads: They have no safety equipment and are not inspected. The ATV’s are used primarily for hunters, farm-, ers, and fishers. They are a very valuable transportation tool for off road.
Sherertz and his deputies have made fifteen arrests - recently. The offenders are usually between the ages of 15 and 17. The arrests usually fall under operating an uninspected vehicle on the highway.
Sherertz comments, “They use them to get from house to house to go meet their buddies.”
These vehicles have no liability insurance. Sherertz says, “None of these vehicles are insured. The only recourse is to sue the family of the child if anything happens.”
According to Sherertz, this has been going on for a while. He has had conferences directly with the parents. But this only has an effect in about half the cases. The other parents are letting their children break the law.
