Woodpeckers were selecting peanuts and flying off with them. The nuthatches took theirs to the big Norwdy maple, where they wedged them in crevices in the bark/

The woodpeckers made trip after trip, each time carrying off a peanut. I am sure they are storing them for winter, but have no proof of that. They are never absent long enough to whack at them, but are quickly back at the feeder, scattering the flock of goldfinches that feed constantly on sunflower seeds.

No bird seems to want to tangle with a Red-bellied Woodpecker, especially the female. She has a fierceness about her that would intimidate me if I was the size of a goldfinch. , .

The last to discover the peanut-feeder was a Carolina Wren. Any food bringing that busy, cheerful little brown bird is special to Lee and me.

Once again, Bruce Jones has broadened my horizons. His gift is keeping Lee and me at the breakfast table longer each day.
