• ELA’s — Electronic Learning Aids, or ELA’s for short, are again popular this year. The Interactive Solar System has planets that light up when activated by a keypad below the display, and audio information about each of the planets when the corresponding key is pressed.
The item includes three AA batteries, and also has a planets quiz with more than 1,000 questions. GeoSafari World is an interactive globe set on an electronic pedestal along the same lines as the Interactive Solar System. The Interactive Solar System is $24.99 for children ages 5 and up, while GeoSafari ($59.99) is for children ages 8 and up.
• Star Wars: The Phantom Menace — The prequel to the existing Star Wars trilogy spawned a new line of toys that should continue to be popular through the holiday season.
Prices range from the action figures ($6.99) to a new item, the Sith Droid Action Game (ages 6 and up, $44.99). The Sith Droid, a mechanical counterpart of the Phantom Menace’s resident bad guy Darth Maul, searched out the heroic Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Amidala and Obi-Wan Kenobi while on the desert planet of Tatooine. The toy sits on a pole, and sensors inside the droid follow a foam j lightsaber-wielding child, firing foam discs at the fledgling Jedi knight.
