On Thursday, Nov. 18, at approximately 10:22 p.m., a fire started in Mrs. Audra Crawford’s home at 60 Slaughter Lane in Woodville. The house nearly burnt to the ground and most of Crawford’s belongings were destroyed.
The 911 call was placed by Crawford’s neighbor. According to Richie Burke, of the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department, the fire “progressed so fast, she didn’t have time to call 911.” The cause of the fire has not been found, and probably will not be due to lack of evidence.
When the fire department arrived at 10:30 p.m., they encountered a fully involved structure fire, with flames blowing out the doors and windows. To extinguish the fire required five hours of work from 30 volunteer firemen. Five local fire departments participated.
Crawford had rented the house since 1971. She was living alone at the time of the fire. She has two sons in the area, Curtis Crawford of Flint Hill and Opie Crawford of Sperryville.
