While preparing to make merry this yuletide, many folks are also looking for ways to make a difference.

It’s a natural combination: Christmas and acts of charity. Gift-giving is on everyone’s mind, so attention is already directed toward others.

Many families make community service a part of their holiday traditions. They spend a Saturday together helping the Jaycees wrap presents, or choose a child’s name from an Angel Tree.

Some county children will be sorting through their old toys for something to give away — and not just to make room for more.

The range of philanthropic options in Fauquier County is wide and choosing among them can be difficult. A good place to start is always the local church — many of them adopt a family for Christmas, take groups of carolers to cheer shut-ins and supply holiday meals.
