Sue Bestwick, executive director of Sunrise Assisted Living in Leesburg, offered some advice on choosing gifts for our parents and older friends during the holidays.
One resident, who had only joined the small community a week earlier, put it succinctly: “No stuff. Visit.”
The best gifts for seniors, said Bestwick, are those that bring people together, and that keep on giving throughout the year. “Children can make up a coupon book,” she suggested, “for parents who are living on their own. It might include grass cutting in the summer months, a gutter cleaning, taking down the storm windows, cleaning the furnace filters.”
All of these things are needed as parents age, are appreciated, and keep the givers and the getters in contact. Sometimes that’s the best present.
