On the other hand, if one has some stock that has gone up in value — say one bought some stock for $500 and now it’s worth $1,000 — one can take the $1,000 in stock and give it to the charity. .
The donor will get a $1,000 writeoff on taxes in either case, but in the First, it will come from after-tax dollars while the second will come from pretax dollars. That might make a significant difference.
