Davette Leonard owns Davette’s Signs and Calligraphy in Sperryville, but the title is misleading. Leonard also specializes in wood carving, portrait painting and trompe 1’oeir, which is French for trick the eye and refers to paintings on walls, such as a bookshelf or window, that look realistic.
Recently, Davette Leonard received a scholarship from Herman Zapf for calligraphy and will branch into computer graphics to assist her. * For her signs, Leonard has recently begun working with water based paints, as opposed to oil based, due to a desire to work with environment friendly materials.
Leonard’s father was a commercial artist and she has always been an artist as well.
Leonard grew up'in New York and recalls, “I went to the Arts Student League when I was eleven in New York City. I constantly drew and painted all through my teens. I attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. I spent many hours, millions of hours working by myself.”
“I went to every show in New York. It was almost too much exposure and gave me a sense of not knowing what I want to do. I still struggle with that. I want to do so many things.”
Recently, Leonard studied with the world renown calligrapher Sheila Waters, “I tracked her down in Pennsylvania.”
She has also studied with portrait and figure drawing with Ned Bittinger who was living in this area, but recently moved to Santa Fe, Calif.
