For several days, maybe a week, the birds ignored the new feeder packed full of peanuts in their reddishbrown covering.
One morning while we were having breakfast, I noticed a chickadee clinging to the wire and pecking vigorously at the peanuts. Isn’t a chickadee — inquisitive and adventurous — always the first to exploit a new food source?
Next, a titmouse attacked the nuts. After that a Whitebreasted Nuthatch was seen pecking through the wire. A Downy Woodpecker followed, and soon the level oilpeanuts in the tube began toldrap, so
