2. Patricia Polacco’s new Christmas book is titled “Welcome Comfort” (Philomel). This lovingly illustrated picture book (suitable for all ages) tells the story of a young foster child, Welcome Comfort, who has moved from family to family and finds Christmas the loneliest time of the year.
His one friend is Mr. Hamp, the school custodian, and Mr. Hamp and his wife begin to act as surrogate parents, taking Welcome on their family outings.
As Christmas approaches, Mr. Hamp explains to Welcome that faith means believing even when you don’t see visible signs. Christmas Eve arrives and the Hamps have left to spend the holiday up north and Welcome is alone with his foster family.
That night he has the most incredible dream that Santa comes to the house and takes him along on the sleigh to deliver the presents. It isn’t until the end of the story that the reader finds out the true identity of Santa, and how Welcome learns to have faith in mankind.
