3. An excellent reference series on religion, history and cultures is titled “What Do We Know About?” (Peter Bedrick Books), where each separate title concentrates on one religion, or one ethnic group, or one period in history.
“What Do We Know About Christianity?” by Carol Watson (suitable for all ages) explains in illustration and text the history behind Christianity as well as how the religion is both celebrated and practiced. The double page spreads illustrate Christians around the world celebrating the life of Jesus Christ. Also appropriate for this holiday season is “What Do We Know About Judaism?”
4. For the youngest child learning about Hanukkah, look for a great little board book, “Hanukkah Lights, Hanukkah Nights” (HarperCollins) by Leslie Kimmelman with illustrations by John Himmelman.
Perfectly designed to fit even the smallest of hands, this story follows the eight nights of Hanukkah as each candle is lighted for the menorah. All of the holiday customs are presented, one night at a time, so that young children will be able to follow the wonder and delight of this holiday.
