Board approves
$98,000 contract
for Sperryville
The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved a $98,790 contract on Thursday, Aug. 15 to build a pedestrian footbridge over the Thornton River and for landscaping.
The contract is part of the $200,000 Transportation Enhancement Act awarded in 1999. The program was created by Congress in 1991 to ensure that a small share of federal transportation funds is invested in projects that enhance communities, the natural environment and historic preservation.
The Virginia Department of Transportation administers the program through an application and review process. Up to 80 percent of transportation project can be financed with federal funds, but a minimum of 20 percent must come from other public or private sources.
The Sperryville contract, awarded to L.G. Zindel Inc. of Washington is part of a larger project that will ultimately include placing utility lines underground, streetscapes along Main Street and pedestrian pathways and crosswalks.
