Essentially the children went through the same process with these robots as Dr. Murphy had with her experimental robots at the WTC.
According to Dr. Murphy, the purpose of the three-day conference was to get government, industry and academia working together. Dr Murphy put it very simply in a telephone interview on the day of the event: “With this industry/research partnership, we’re trying to get this stuff out of the labs so that it can be useful.”
As important to her was the workshop with the children. “They are the future,” she said and she felt it was terribly important to get them interested in science.
“How do you use things that you’ve never thought about before? It’s all about creativity.” In keeping with that, she pointed out that the children were able to come up with several better solutions to the problem than the graduate students had. The children were able to “see” the better solution.
