He had previously been engaged in private practice in St. Louis for some 20 years, and also served a stint as the Chief Federal Prosecutor in the St. Louis area. He is a graduate of Amherst College and of the Washington University (St. Louis) Law School.
Against this backdrop of service, ABA President Hirshon declared: “Throughout a career stretching back to 1949, Bill Webster has demonstrated impeccable integrity, sound judgment, exceptional competence and unswerving national loyalty.”
Mr. Webster’s selection for the award was especially appropriate in this post Sept. 11 year. “He is a leader for our time, and has raised the leadership standard for future generations,” President Hirshon observed, describing William H. Webster as : “the embodiment of legal leadership, a quality critical to our nation as we grapple with the tension between security and law enforcement and protection of civil liberties.”
The American Bar Association, including over 400,000 members, is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the U.S. or abroad. The presentation of its “ABA Medal” to William Webster by President Hirshon was made before the association’s 500 plus House of Delegates’ members (including the author of this article).
