of eyes and eight long, delicate, slightly hairy, grayish to dark brown legs. Its most distinguishing feature is the shape of a violin just behind the eyes. The brown recluse spider is often referred to as the fiddleback spider.

to avoid a bite
Knowing what the brown recluse looks like is useful, but you won’t see him until you’ve been bitten.
The brown recluse does not like to be disturbed, it seeks and prefers seclusion. It hides — in shoes and clothing or folded bedding and towels not used for long periods of time, in an unused bed, in corners, and under furniture. Outdoors it again prefers undisturbed areas — an area in the garden that has not been weeded for some time, the woodpile left untouched since last winter, in mulch and wood chips or in the storage shed or comer of the garage.
So shake out the clothing before dressing, remove unwanted items, get rid of cluttered areas, dust and vacuum often especially around windows, in comers, and under furniture. Wear gloves when handling firewood and use the same common sense precautions outdoors as you always should.
