By 2001 19 Virginia jurisdictions reported that 215 dead birds tested positive for WNV, and five (three of which reported no positive birds) reported a total of six horses that tested positive for the disease. In the United States in 2001, the outbreak touched 27 states plus the District of Columbia, and ten of those reported 66 human cases.
The virus has spread from the East Coast as far west as the longitude demarking westernmost Texas and North Dakota, and it is unlikely that it will not spread throughout the continental U S. within a few years.
