The spread of the virus nas been rapid since first encountered in the United states.
That first U.S. outbreak was in August and September of 1999 in Queens, New York, where 59 serious cases of the disease resulted in 7 deaths. Analyses of the data after that outbreak indicated that there is a strong correlation between WVW-positive mosquitoes, avian deaths, and human cases of the illness. Avian deaths were found to be a reliable indicator of possible human contraction of the disease, »nd precautions must be taken in infected areas to minimize those possibilities.
t In the year 2000, following the first outbreak in the United States, eleven states reported evidence of the virus, but only 20 serious human cases, and two deaths, were reported to the Centers for Disease Control.
