Another business is the Quarles Food Store/Shell Service Station. A potential source of petroleum contaminants, it is regulated by Virginia’s underground storage facilities program.
The three 8,000-gallon gasoline tanks and one 2,000gallon kerosene tank have overfill and spill containments, overfill alert devices, non-corrodible tanks and lines, leak detection devices, and there are a number of monitoring wells around the station. The parking lot, 41 parking slots and 32 more available for expansion, is subject to storm water runoff. Drippings from customer vehicles and any of their fuel island spills are carried under westbound US 211 to a grassy swale in the median strip, and then under eastbound US 211 to a discharge point. Another drainage system runs under Route 622 to the large depression in front of the mini-storage facility.

What of future development? Along Route 622, flanking either side, the land is currently covered mainly with pines, cedar, and oaks. The Clevenger’s Ccyner Village Center Plan envisions 250 homes here, including those already in the Deer Park subdivision. With about 125
