The start of the school year marks a major outreach effort on the part of Governor Mark Warner and his administration to increase enrollment in the Virginia Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) program.
FAMIS is funded by both the state and federal government and it provides low-cost health insurance for children of working families. Currently in Rappahannock there are 45 children enrolled in the program. It is the goal of the Warner administration to increase that number by reaching all of the children who qualify.
Governor Warner brought attention to the enrollment problems at the end of the school year last year during the ceremonial bill signing of the two house bills (HB 1062 and HB 790) designed to fix the problem. He said that the “tangle of red tape and paperwork” was getting in the way of getting the children of low income families signed up.
