There is yet no antiviral that can be used to prevent or cure the disease, and supportive care is the primary treatment.
The Virginia Department of Health estimates that one of 300 people bitten by an infected mosquito will contract the disease and one out of 100150 of those will become seriously ill.
Approximately 11 percent of those seriously ill will die of WNV, and most of the deaths have occurred in people greater than 50 years of age.
The only viable approach to protection at the present time is to follow the advise of the Virginia Department of Health and the Centers for Disease control: control mosquitoes from breeding and protect yourself and family members by being well-covered, avoiding outdoors when mosquitoes are most likely to bite, and by using insect repellent when outdoors.
