Herb loved the introduction, with couples dancing in silhouette accompanied by wry and amusing comments, very evocative of Japanese culture.
Mr. Sugiyama is placed in a beginner’s course with an odd cast of characters, and is assigned a middle-aged, slightly plump, but wholly irritable teacher named Tokoyo — not the sweetfaced Mai espied from the train.
Unexpectedly, Mr. Sugiyama enjoys the classes, progresses, and after a year is talked into entering a competition as partner to his illtempered teacher.
Meanwhile, his long-suffering wife, who thinks he is having an affair, hires a private detective, only to discover his affair is with dance, and not another woman.
She and their daughter secretly attend his first competition.
When the daughter yells something like “Go, Dad,” he is so startled the couple are side-swiped by other dancers.
In the melee, our quiet protagonist steps on Tokoyo’s skirt, ripping it completely off, and she is left in her underclothes on the dance floor.
