While people may think that it is inherently morbid to think about dying, it is essential if one is to die well. Dying well takes some planning and choices. Dying may represent the ultimate loss of control over our affairs, but that does not mean that we cannot manage many aspects of the dying process. To do so ensures that our goals and wishes are respected as we face the final days of our lives. Planning to die includes such matters as pre-planning our funeral arrangements and making an advance directive, which specifies one’s wishes for care in the event of an illness or injury that renders that person unable to speak for him or herself.
