The carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, nitrogen and sulfur oxides and particulate matter that fossil fuel-based energy produces are less of a problem in gasification plants.

The volume of ash produced by gasification equates to about 10 percent of the volume of the original trash, Schneider said. And the ash can be reused in concrete, making-it possible to run a gasification plant where nothing goes into a landfill.

Glass and metal are not combustible and need to be removed from the trash used for gasification. Those materials are separated from the waste and sold for recycling.

He said the plants are built on a small scale for on-site use by small businesses, government buildings, schools and large commercial and industrial operations.

RER plants are built in many sizes, but can produce up to 15 megawatts of electricity - enough to power roughly 15,000 homes, Schneider said.

In addition to environmental benefits, Schneider said gasification plants provide more reliable delivery and stable prices.

The process is affordable because the fuel is inexpensive or free and the plants do not require transmission lines because the power is used on site. However, plants are built parallel to the electrical grid and can be connected to a utility in case of an emergency.

“Because we’ve got this constant volume of trash, I don’t have to worry about supply,” Schneider said.
