On her husband Calvin’s birthday, Carol Huffman of Edinburg, Va., wanted to make his wildest dreams come true. What she did not realize, however, was how wild her gift would be.
“I told him we were going to an art show,” said Huffman with a laugh. Instead she offered Calvin his pick of a group of wild mustangs that were up for adoption.
Each year the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a mustang adoption program in Lorton, Va. These programs, held across the country, allow horse lovers to own a genuine wild mustang from the animals’natural habitat in several Western states. “They are just like deer,” ‘said Huffman. “You can’t even touch them and they are very quick.” The untamed spirit of the mustang was all too clear to the Huffmans when it came time to load their newly adopted prize into their horse trailer. “She was frightened to death,” remembered Huffman, “She was so wild that she knocked herself out.”
