Airmen never lost a single bomber to enemy fighters. This positive record of accomplishment of black airmen during World War II, and after, was an important factor in the initiation of the historic social change to achieve racial equality in America. In 1948, President Truman, by executive order, ended segregation in the U.S. Military.
A musical program will provide attendees with exceptional song and music. Among those appearing on stage will be the 40-member Martin Luther King Choir of Fauquier County, led by Rep. Lemuel Montgomery, pastor of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Amissville. Another voice brought back “by popular request” this year will be Nan Butler Roberts.
The celebration is sponsored each year by the Julia E.Boddie Scholarship Committee which gives the “Dream Keepers” award to a local citizen who has by deed and example helped keep the MLK dream alive.
