There is an old adage that says when it rains, it pours. In the case of the Rappahannock County High School varsity girls’ basketball team, a rowboat is definitely needed.
First, the Lady Panthers lost starting small forward Noel Johns to a possible season-ending knee injury with just two minutes left in an 88-28 Group A Bull Run, District loss to Clarke County a week ago.
With Johns sidelined, Rappahannock County had just seven players to dress for the rest of its games this season. Things got worse Tuesday night in a 58-29 loss to visiting Manassas Park.
With 2:17 left in the second quarter, sophomore forward Emily Carter got tangled with a pair of Manassas Park players and crashed to the floor. She suffered a gash under her chin that required medical attention. She did not return to the game.
The troubles, unfortunately, did not end with Carter’s injury. Junior guard Ashley Vest fouled out at the 3:14 mark of the third quarter. Then, sophomore guard Sarah Smoot fouled out with 2:15 left in the game.
Rappahannock County (2-10) finished with just four players on the court, including junior center Kim Hutcheson, who played with four fouls most of the fourth quarter.
“Even though we had only four players, we still played hard,” Rappahannock County head coach Rhonda Jenkins said. “But turnover city is still killing us every game.”
Jenkins expressed concern that only have a handful of players will be costly. Aside from the injuries, she worried that her players might be able to stay with an opponent in the first half. But without reinforcements, the starters would be exhausted in the final quarters. Amanda Smoot played an outstanding game for the Lady Panthers, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Rebecca Tupper had eight points. Hutcheson finished with 11 rebounds.
