The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) is launching a new campaign, Enlighten, that mobilizes citizens to use less energy, not more.
Dominion claims that a giant power line through Virginia’s historic countryside is needed to meet rising demand for energy. This transmission line would connect to some of America’s dirtiest coal-buming power plants, ignoring the urgent challenges of climate change. Instead, Enlighten asks citizens to make a commitment to energy efficiency, starting with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) which use 75% less electricity. If each of Dominion’s 2.3 million customers replaced one 100 watt incandescent bulb with a CFL the total energy savings could be as much as 150 megawatts.
Because CFLs require only a quarter of the energy of a standard light bulb, each bulb saves between $30 and $60 in electricity bills over the life of the bulb. Each CFL bulb also saves 500 pounds of coal and 450 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions CFLs also last ten times longer than incandescent
