In November, RER signed a contract with Siemens Building Technologies to supply a gasification plant that will use municipal solid waste to produce 6 megawatts of electricity for the Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas.

The plant will use all of the municipal solid waste collected from the base and the city of Abilene - some 42,000 tons annually, according to the Associated Press. When complete, Dyess will be able to remove itself from the public utility grid while maintaining 100 percent of its operations.

Tbm Denslow, energy manager at Dyess, told the Associated Press that the base will save about $2.5 million per year on electricity, which now costs the defense installation about $5.5 million annually.

JRER’s gasification plants have standardized, modular designs that allow them to be assembled quickly. Schneider said the air force base project is scheduled to begin in the next month and be operational by the end of the year.

Leaders of Caribbean nations are also beginning to look at gasification in an effort to limit the amount of valuable land devoted to landfills. Schneider is scheduled to present RER’s technology for converting landfills to energy on Jan. 26 at the seventh annual Caribbean Energy conference in Coral Gables, Fla.

Rappahannock may not have the same land constraints of an island nation, but Schneider said the county could benefit from a gasification plant to power the schools or county buildings. He said the ideal location would be near the Flatwood Refuse and Recycling Center on U.S. 211.
