Students, especially those who involve themselves in numerous extracurricular activities, quickly discover that, with all the course offers, time management is paramount.
“You have to put more thought into this class,” said Carter, who starts for the volleyball, basketball and softball teams.
Sometimes, despite devoting more time to the class, Carter added, one’s grade is not always satisfying.
“My low point came when I got a B in the class (as a freshman),” she added. “I wasn’t used to getting Bs. The class takes so much out of you and just to get a B. But you need to take it if you are looking for a challenge. The class takes people who really want to learn.”
The red pen is the unofficial mascot of Delcour’s Cambridge classes. No student escapes it. It makes its first appearance on a student’s summer assignments when Delcour returns them early in the first marking period. Sometimes, those red scribbles can hurt a student’s pride, especially when someone has become accustomed to excellent grades.
“My first paper,” freshman Natalie Tupper laughed, “had marks all over it.”
Delcour’s students claim that she catches nearly every grammatical goof or analytical error that they make. But to succeed in the class, a student quickly learns that the red pen is not the enemy. Nor is it a friend.
“I was surprised when I got my first paper back. I got an 80 on it,”sophomore Chris Nugent said with a smile. “That’s pretty good for a first time with her.”
Red Pen is Delcour’s trusty sidekick. At least that is what sophomore Collins believes.
