“The fact that the overall Cambridge program is adaptable to a particular school is what I like,” said Delcour, who has taught English at every level for 17 years. “Cambridge says that here is what they have to offer. You take what you want, and they are there to help you.”

Delcour, some of her students say, is the queen of IGSCE. Over the past four years, she has attended countless training sessions in places as close as Pripce William County’s Potomac Senior and Brentsville District high schools and as far away as Bay High School in Pensacola, FL. She shadowed teachers and then interviewed their students to learn how and what they had learned. She also did online workshops specific to her subject.

The challenge that the material offers is at the student as well as teacher level.

“The training offered is practical. I could use it the next day in class,” Delcour added. “(Cambridge’s people) were honest. This is labor-intensive for the teachers. The objective of the program is to be able to write well; to think, read, speak and write.”

Taking an IGSCE class can change the way that students learn. They must go beyond a just-the-facts mentality. They could analyze a piece of literature, for example, and then draw comparisons to other pieces that they have read. They might make predictions about how a story or book ends and rewrite an ending. They could integrate what has been learned in other classes into their writing. They could engage in
