society, teams 01 iu to lo people raise funds for the American Cancer Society and then participate by taking turns moving around a track during the overnight event. Fund raising mostly takes place before the event as Relay teams’ members solicit sponsors for themselves and their teams and through other , activities such as bake sales and yard sales. This year, the ninth annual Rappahannock County Relay for life, will be held on May 19 and 20 at the Rappahannock County Elementary School. In preparation for the Relay, three team captain’s meetings will he held. The first is Thursday, January 18 at the Washington Baptist Church. Subsequent meetings will be held on ' March 15 and April 19.
The Relay is also one of the largest community events in Rappahannock County and is a fun event being both a celebration of life and a community party.. The Relay teams set yp campsites and survivors yvalk the first lap, symbolizing the progress we have made. Evening luminary ceremonies memorialize those special people who have lost their battles yvith the disease and celebrate those who have survived. In addition, cancer education takes place.
