On Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) will celebrate the life and work of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in programs held at the Fauquier and Middletown Campuses. All programs are free and open to the public.
The Fauquier Campus program will take place at 5:30 p.m. in The Loeb Center, located at 6480 College Street in Warrenton. The 60-member Martin Luther King Jr. choir from Mt. Zion Baptist Church will perform a variety of traditional and contemporary spirituals under the direction of its director, Rev. Lemuel Montgomery. In addition, guest speaker Nan Butler Roberts will address the audience in her message entitled “Vision for America’s Tomorrow.” Roberts is a local musician, singer, writer, producer, speaker and coordinator of youth and women’s programs. In addition to Roberts’s speech, Paulette Garner, a local poet and educator, will read original poetry about Martin Luther King Jr.
The Middletown Campus program will take place at noon and 7 p.m. in the William H. McCoy Special Events Center located inside the Alson H. Smith, Jr. Technology Center, located at 173 Skirmisher Lane in Middletown. The program will include the showing of the video, “Legacy of a Dream,” which is narrated by actor James Earl Jones and examines the life and times of King. LFCC students and community members will also share readings and reflections about King and perform musical numbers.
