During his freshman year, the Emmy Awards inspired him to write a list of what Rappahannock County High School’s award-winning television programming could be. The list played on the names of various television shows. His entry for Delcour provided her with a good laugh:
For Best Animation Series: “Delcoura the Explorer” — The queen of children’s animation explores the magical world of literature with her trusty sidekick, Red Pen. Starring Melissa Delcour.
'Red Pen (yes, personification no longer exists, junior Nancy Herbert said.) also makes appearances during the Christmas seasons. For the past two years, Collins and classmates Sarah Smoot and Morgan Flournoy and juniors Katie Long and Herbert have decorated a two-foot, artificial tree with red pens and York Peppermint Patties, Delcour’s favorite candy. How much more environmentally-friendly can a tree be?
“I guess there’s some sort of adoration for Red Pen,” Collins said. “You certainly see him enough.”
But seeing Red Pen does not always translate into the negative. The Cambridge program gives students ample opportunities to learn to write in various styles or polish what they have created.
Freshman Will Downey, for example, composed a Shakespeare rap to go with his group’s power point slide show this past fall. Some of Downey’s class1mates kept their presentation light by hurling insults that Shakespeare had written more than 500 years ago at compatriots. The freshman class also reads “A Raisin in the Sim”
