o.ouu persons in tne nve-county Rappahannock/Rapidan District who were diagnosed with cancer each year between 1999 and 2003 and the more than 2,000 persons who died of cancer in the same period.
In Rappahannock County alone, the incidence of cancer is estimated to be around 45 per 10,000. That means that, given our population of roughly 7,000, each year about 32 persons are newly diagnosed with cancer. It is no wonder that we all know so many persons and families whose lives have been so profoundly affected by this disease.
Local figures are not available regarding the long-term probability of any one of us being struck by cancer but the national figures are sobering. Nationwide, the life time probability that a male will develop some form of invasive cancer is 1 in 2; for females, the figure is 1 in 3.
Now is your opportunity to assist the American Cancer Society’s work in research and programs that will reduce the cancer incidence in the future and provide help now to those with cancer. Relay for Life is the only county fund raiser for the Rappahannock County Unit of the American Cancer
