Further motions were filed by Ira Wayne Cloniger’s defense team on Monday, just two weeks from his firstdegree murder trial. Cloniger was scheduled to appear in court at the January 8 session on a separate charge of transporting a firearm as a felon.
Public defender Jeffery Adams said that his client was unable to attend the session because he was at a doctor’s appointment for a neck injury. Cloniger reportedly complained during a December 2006 court hearing in Culpeper County about not receiving proper care for his neck problems. The firearms case has been rescheduled for April 5.
Cloniger is charged with the murder of Edward Fletcher, Jr. of Steven City, Va., and was the subject of a week-long manhunt in Rappahannock County in July 2006 following the alleged murder.
The murder trial is scheduled for three days beginning on January 22.
The court did not hear several motions filed by the defense that morning due to Cloniger’s absence.
Judge Jeffery Parker did hold hearings, however, on requested subpoenas by the defense after Adams and Commonwealth Attorney Peter Luke waived the necessity for Cloniger’s presence.
