‘Eleni’

The movie Eleni will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Satuniay and Sunday, May 23 and 24, at 7:30 p.m. The movie stars Kate Nelhgan, John Malkovich and Linda Hunt. Based on his 1983 best-selling book Eleni, Nicholas Cage (John Malkovich) spends years researching the life and death of his mother, Eleni Gatzoyiannis who was killed 30 yeare ago. Eleni was organizing the escape of her children to the United States from her native village during Greece’s bitter civil war when she was discovered by Greek communist guerrillas and executed for her actions. Determined to find the men who had condemned his mother, Nicholas returned to Greece for retribution. The movie is rated PG. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

The carnival dates for this year are July 22 through 26. A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded on July 26.

Revival at Chester Gap

Revival services will be held May 31-June 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Chester Gap Baptist Church. Rev. George L. Euting, pastor of New Bridge Baptist Church in Richmond, will be preaching. All are welcome.

Carnival set for June 10-13

The Amissville Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual carnival June 10-13. The parade will be featured on Friday, June 12, at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to volunteer their time in helping with the carnival, donating food, or entering the parade should call the firehouse at 937-5126 or Sheila Scott at 937-4357.

Rescue Squad to sell food

The Sperryville Rescue Squad will be selling food Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 23-25, firom 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sperryville Emporium. A bake sale will also be held. Any county resident wishing to donate baked goods can drop them by the Emporium or call Nancy Leake at 987-8971.

Musical program

A musical program will be given at the Promise Land Baptist Church on Sunday, May 24, at 3 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend. John R. Pendleton is pastor.

Herbal healing workshop

“Healing the Family in the Wise Woman Way,” a workshop led by Kathleen Maier and Sherry Willis, will be held in the Middle St. Gallery on May 23 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The workshop will present parents and individuals as their families’ primary healers. A home herbal medicine chest will be provided as the base for demonstration. The cost is $40 per person, $60 per couple. For more information and registration please call 636-3078.
