William C. Chase Jr., chairman of the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors, was nominated Saturday as the Democratic candidate for the 26th District state senatorial seat. Mr. Chase will face Republican incumbent Kevin G. Miller Sr. in November’s election.
Mr. Chase said that “in state government, I’d like to see agriculture represented more strongly. After being on a farm for 17 years, I feel I would represent agriculture better.”
He added that he feels the main issue of the campaign will be Sen. Miller’s lack of responsiveness to the people. “I will represent all the counties in the district... I’d like to offer to the people of Rappahannock, Madison, Culpeper and Fauquier counties the opportunity to become involved in planning. I don’t intend to exclude Rockingham and Page, but I would represent the entire district.”
Another point he intends to address, Mr. Chase added, is Sen. Miller’s tendency to focus power on the state. He gave as an example the trailer bill, cosponsored by Sen. Miller, which attempted to remove the authority of individual counties to regulate the siting of trailers.
The bill failed to pass the General Assembly.
“I’d just like to see a different philosophical approach - to return power to the counties.”
The Democratic candidate, Mr. Chase said in his acceptance speech, must be responsive to the people. “I feel a senator should be people-oriented, and that’s exactly what my life is all about; being oriented to all the people in the district.
