Most pond owners, even when properly instructed, apply fertilizer in a haphazard manner.

Most farm ponds are naturally fertile. Even in the southeastern United States, where pond waters are generally considered nutrientpoor, recent studies have shown that open-pasture ponds receive adequate amounts of nutrients through % runoff to siipport^good sportfish populations. .

Most studies suggest that fertilization rates should be greatly reduced or better yet, omitted entirely. The need for fertilizing a pond should be established by tests of soil and water fertility, rather than the casual assumption that all fish ponds need to be fertilized.

Haphazard or excessive fertilization of pond waters encourages nuisance growth of algae and water weeds that seriously interfere with the use and enjoyment of recreational ponds.

In overfertilized ponds, dense growths of waterweeds can restrict swimming, boating, fishing, and other water sports. Moreover, dead and drying waterweeds impart unpleasant taste to sportfish, emit offensive Odors, reduce water clarity, and clog irrigation and livestock watering systems.
