Virginia state parks are more than just campgrounds and cabins, however. Swimming has long been a favorite recreational activity, and it’s available at some state parks.
Watch the sailboats and water skiers from the beach on a peaceful cove at Claytor Lake State Park, or epjoy the tranquility of the 50-acre Bear Creek Lake from the park’s sandy beach or the patio of the hillside concession area.
In all, there are seven state parks with swimming facilities, with the eighth under construction and expected to be ready for the 1988 season at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Getting into the swim of things is possible at Chippokes, Natural Tunnel, Pocahontas, Staunton River or Westmoreland State Parks. Both pools and beaches have concession facilities and modem bath
