Two - not one, but two - rock ‘n’ roll dance bands will be pumping out dancing music at the Washington Fire Hall this Saturday night.
Rosters for the two groups include some of Rappahannock’s finest musicians: Bill Abernathy, Linda Heimstra, Steve Lann and Mitch and Steve Hostetter in the Lost Beatniks and Julie Coon, Terry Waggener, Donald Gaskell, Dinah Pearson Day, Karen Hathaway, Jody Carbone and Vincent Day in The X Brand Band.
The music will start at 8:30 and continue until 12:30. Admission is $5; sodas, juice, coffee and baked goods will be sold.
All proceeds from the dance go to The Last Resort. This is the organization that grew out of the Jessie Waites Fund.
The fund was initially set up to provide support for seven-year-old Jessie after she developed leukemia. Money from the fund met needs missed by the various social and medical services. It helped with household expenses when Jessie’s mother, a nurse at the Washington Hospital Center, used all her paid leave and vacation to stay with her daughter during the early, intensive treatments with radiation and chemo-therapy at Georgetown University Hospital. Then as Jessie’s illness responded to therapy and the little girl was able to resume more of a normal life, money from the fund went for school tuition and extras like a summer ballet camp.
At present, Jessie remains in remission and her prognosis for a complete recovery is good. Jessie’s mother is on better financial footing and is now able to provide the extras herself.
