Centel lowers
phone rates
Central Telephone Company of Virginia (Centel) is voluntarily decreasing its basic telephone access line rates and zone mileage charges approximately five percent, effective May 1.
William P. Flippo III, Centers area manager in Front Royal, said the rate reduction will result in lower telephone bills for all Centel customers, with individual savings varying from exchange to exchange. The total annual reduction will amount to about $1.8 million.
In making the voluntary reduction in access line rates and zone mileage charges, Centel is cooperating with the State Corporation Commission (SCC), which earlier asked Virginia telephone companies to consider reducing rates to reflect the expected positive impact on earnings of lower federal tax rates that take effect in July.
“Since the Tax Reform Act of 1986 is reducing the taxes paid by utility companies, Centel believes it’s only fair for our rate payers to receive a benefit from that reduction,” Mr. Flippo said.
In the Washington exchange, one-party, residential customers will see their access line rates decreased from $9.16 to $8.70, a reduction of 46 cents a month.
