The best way to avoid being bitten by ticks is to use plenty of insect repellent, check frequently for crawling ticks and remove any you find. If a tick does bite and attach itself to your skin, don’t forceably remove the tick, as you may break off the beak and face a festering sore and fiirther risk of contamination by the blood already in the tick and on its beak.
The tick may be removed by dropping gasoline, kerosene, or chloroform on them. They will loosen their hold and come out easily.
Wasps, hornets, bees, and yellow jackets are a source of much misery to the outdoors user.
Anyone who accidentally (and I don’t believe anyone would do it on purpose) disturbs a nest of hornets, yellow jackets, or even paper wasps, could receive enough stings to suffer heart damage or even death.
Each person’s sensitivity to stings changes day by day, some becoming less severe, some becoming more severe. Simply put, the stings you have had in the past are not representative of the way you will react to even one sting in the future.
For those of us who are allergic to stings, we must take extra caution not to be stung, and know what is necessary in the case of a sting.
If you are allergic, sound medical advice and proper preparation are necessary before going afield.
