Like birds, some insects use song to attract mates, defend territories and warn of impending danger. The great majority of these unseen songsters are members of the great insect group orthoptera. In addition to locusts of plague fame, cockroaches with miserable table manners and those best known of garden hunters, the mantises, this group includes grasshoppers of all types, crickets including Jiminy, katydids, wart biters and walking sticks. All but the last are singers.
As with bird song, the astute human listener is much better able to grasp the diversity of life forms in a wild spot than is the visuallyoriented observer.
