Mr. Reynolds informed the council of the substance of the application, but noted that he declined to offer an opinion on the permit since he had worked with her in setting up the structure for the business. He described the application as for “a retail use in a residential structure, located in village mixed use.”
Ms. Haase, who previously ran a popular store and restaurant next to the Post Office called Nature’s Foods, told the council that the business would consist entirely of packaged items, and that no food preparation would be done by the business. She added that she planned to limit the shop to the first floor, and would live above the store on the second floor.
After council member Ray Goqch asked Ms. Haase for more specifics as to what she would be selling, she told the council that she envisioned selling fine wines and imported beer as well, “like the Town Duck,” a successful specialty shop in Warrenton. That, she said, would be contingent upon the issuance of an ABC permit.
Mr. Wickens suggested that “if there is any one building which cries out for this use it is this building — especially after what council did in allowing the welfare building to be built there. We have seriously compromised the residential quality of that house; in fairness we should approve this specific use.”
